The number of job vacancies in the United Kingdom has fallen to its lowest point in over five years, a trend attributed to smaller businesses reducing their recruitment efforts. Official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that vacancy numbers decreased slightly to 707,000 during the May to July period.

Small firms are increasingly citing labor and operating costs as the primary reasons for scaling back their hiring plans. Despite this dip in vacancies, the ONS indicated that the overall labor market remained largely unchanged, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.9%.

Meanwhile, growth in regular earnings, excluding bonuses, saw a modest increase. In the three months leading up to June, regular earnings grew at an annual pace of 3.5%.
