UK Buyers Can Save Up to £12,800 on New Cars This September
Analysis reveals significant discounts on popular models, including electric, hybrid, and petrol vehicles, ahead of the 76-plate change.
September marks a peak period for the new car market in the UK, with potential savings of over £12,800 on offer for buyers willing to negotiate. Independent analysis by Insider Car Deals has identified 20 new car bargains carrying the upcoming 76 registration plate, with discounts reaching more than a quarter off the list price for some popular models.
Major manufacturers such as Vauxhall, Peugeot, BMW, Audi, and Toyota are among those offering substantial reductions. The deals encompass a range of powertrains, including petrol, hybrid, and electric vehicles, with even a notable discount found on a diesel model despite their declining presence in showrooms.
Navigating New Car Deals
The September and March plate-change months traditionally see increased showroom activity, with manufacturers and dealers rolling out incentives to attract buyers. Sales staff often have more flexibility to offer discounts during these periods. However, headline savings may not always reflect the best achievable deal.
Insider Car Deals emphasizes that a significant "discount gap" often exists between the initial price offered by a salesperson and the final price achievable through negotiation and market knowledge. Pat Hoy, founder of Insider Car Deals, explains that while manufacturers' incentives and finance contributions are widely available, the key differentiator is how much of an individual dealer's margin they are willing to contribute.
Through independent market research and mystery shopping of UK dealerships, Insider Car Deals aims to establish realistic target prices for consumers. Their findings indicate that savvy negotiation can lead to savings of hundreds or even thousands of pounds.
Top Discounts This September
Among the most significant savings is a 34.8% discount on the Vauxhall Frontera Electric, potentially saving buyers nearly £9,500. The Peugeot e-2008 follows with a 28.5% discount, offering savings of over £9,000. The Audi A5 Saloon PHEV boasts the largest absolute saving, with nearly £12,821 off the list price, representing a 25.9% discount.
Other notable deals include the Seat Leon with a 25.8% saving, the BMW iX2 electric SUV with a 23.9% discount, and the Toyota C-HR hybrid with a 23.4% reduction. The MG S5 EV is also highlighted with a 23.3% discount, featuring an attractive interest-free PCP deal.
While electric vehicle (EV) discounts are becoming more stabilized after reaching high levels earlier in the year, many manufacturers continue to offer strong incentives. For instance, the BMW iX2 and Audi Q4 e-tron, both electric models, are available with substantial savings. The Ford Puma Gen-E, an electric variant of Britain's best-selling car, also presents a competitive offer with a 20.8% discount.
A Mix of Powertrains and Practicality
The list also features practical family cars like the Skoda Kamiq (22.8% discount), Peugeot 208 hybrid (21.9% discount), Skoda Octavia Hatchback (20.8% discount), and the Volkswagen Golf (19.7% discount). For those seeking smaller vehicles, the Toyota Aygo X offers a 20.5% saving, which is considered rare for Toyota's smaller models.
The Mazda CX-60 stands out as the only diesel model in the top 20 discounts, offering a 19.1% saving and an interest-free PCP deal. Volkswagen's Polo, typically known for holding its value, has discounts of 19.1%, and the Peugeot 5008 seven-seat SUV is available with a 19.0% saving.
The analysis underscores the importance of understanding the entirety of a finance package, not just the monthly cost. Factors like PCP APR, Guaranteed Future Value (GFV), and manufacturer deposit contributions all play a role in the overall value of a deal. Buyers are advised to conduct thorough research and negotiate effectively to secure the best possible price.
