Supermarket chain Iceland is set to open its first store in the Falkland Islands in December, according to managing director Lord Richard Walker.

He announced on LinkedIn that the new branch in Stanley, the islands' capital, will be the first UK high street brand to establish a presence there. The store will cater to a population of approximately 3,500 residents.

Lord Walker, whose business is based in Deeside, Wales, indicated that the company is expanding internationally. "We actually wholesale or franchise to over 75 different countries," he stated, adding that Iceland has been observing the Falkland Islands as a potential market for some time.

He described the market as "very underserved, with a lack of competition." Lord Walker also noted that Iceland's predominantly frozen product range is well-suited for transportation and export. The timing of the opening, he told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, is coincidental despite current geopolitical considerations.
