Raffles London at The OWO, a £1.85 billion luxury hotel located in the former Old War Office building in Whitehall, has opened its doors, catering to a surprising demographic: families. Despite its opulent setting and historical significance, the hotel has implemented features designed to welcome younger guests and multigenerational groups.
A Family-Friendly Approach to Luxury
Upon arrival, guests are escorted to rooms that, while exquisitely furnished with marble bathrooms and dressing rooms, also include thoughtful child-friendly additions. These can range from play tents filled with age-appropriate books and toys to cuddly toys on beds and essential bathroom amenities like potters and step stools for sinks. This approach aims to ensure that even the youngest travelers feel accommodated.
The hotel boasts 120 rooms, including 39 suites, and underwent a significant £1.85 billion restoration before its opening in September 2023. This extensive renovation involved meticulously excavating the building's foundation to create a four-floor underground Guerlain Spa. The spa complex features a gymnasium, treatment rooms, and a 20-meter heated swimming pool, with designated family hours from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Immersing in History and Unique Experiences
Beyond its modern amenities, Raffles London at The OWO offers a rich historical experience. Guided tours delve into the building's past, including the grand staircase where Winston Churchill addressed staff and the Haldane Suite, which was once used by four prime ministers. The restoration itself was a monumental task, involving the cleaning of 50 acres of ceilings and the installation of a Murano chandelier with over 3,000 glass pieces.
Dining experiences also pay homage to the building's heritage. The 'Secrets & Spies' afternoon tea is a culinary interpretation of military intelligence history. Children can engage with the themed patisseries, while live piano music often accompanies the service in the drawing room.
A unique offering is the 'Mini Butler' experience, which allows children to don a butler jacket and participate in select hotel duties, such as mixing and serving cocktails. This interactive activity provides a memorable experience for young guests aspiring to hospitality roles.
The hotel also features the Poppy Suite, reconstructed after Second World War bomb damage and adorned with a large glass poppy installation honoring veterans. This space offers a moment of reflection, allowing guests, including children, to appreciate the historical significance and artistic tribute.
Accommodations at Raffles London at The OWO start from £1,000 a night for an executive room for two adults and one child, with a Westminster Suite for two adults and two children priced from £1,200 a night. Afternoon tea is available from £87 per person.
