India's beauty market is experiencing a significant boom, with projections indicating it will nearly double in value to $40 billion by the end of the decade. This growth rate is twice that of the country's GDP and the broader retail market, attracting substantial global investment. Major international companies like Estée Lauder and L'Oréal Group have recently made significant acquisitions and investments in homegrown Indian beauty brands.

Estée Lauder fully acquired ayurvedic company Forest Essentials earlier this year, while L'Oréal Group took a majority stake in digital personal care brand Innovist in June. Unilever has also been active, with its venture capital arm making at least four beauty investments in India over the past couple of years. Forest Essentials, founded in the early 2000s, has grown from a startup into a billion-dollar company with a global presence.

Experts attribute this surge to rising spending power, particularly among India's youth. The country's per capita income crossed $2,000 in 2019, a threshold often associated with a significant increase in discretionary spending. Projections suggest that by 2030, approximately 155 million Indian households could earn over $9,500 annually, further boosting the market.

"Historically we've underspent on beauty because there was just no purchasing power for anything other than the very basic stuff - such as all-purpose soap or face powder," explained Kushal Bhatnagar, a partner at business consultancy Redseer. "But now, along with more spending power, there is improved access, distribution and product education. The internet broke these barriers, with brands leveraging the power of social media platforms and influencers to reach consumers directly."

E-commerce is playing a crucial role in this expansion, with online channels expected to account for around 35% of all beauty spending by 2030, a dramatic increase from just 8% five years ago. The combination of increased income, enhanced distribution networks, and the direct consumer engagement facilitated by social media and e-commerce is fueling this rapid growth. The country's position as having the world's largest youth population is also a key demographic driver.
