Travellers looking to join hotel loyalty programs can take advantage of introductory offers on debit cards linked to major hotel chains. These cards allow users to earn points on spending, which can be redeemed for free stays, and can also help boost loyalty status for perks like room upgrades and complimentary breakfast. However, the cards typically come with significant annual fees, making them most suitable for frequent travellers or those already engaged with hotel reward schemes.

Rob Burgess, editor of the frequent traveller website Head for Points, noted that current introductory bonuses can effectively offset the first year's annual fee. The hotel chains currently featuring strong introductory deals are Hilton, IHG, and Marriott Bonvoy.

Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card

Hilton Honors offers two debit cards through travel card provider Currensea. The Hilton Plus debit card's welcome bonus has been increased to 50,000 points from 15,000 until September 7. Additionally, cardholders receive 35 elite qualifying nights, up from 30. Achieving 30 elite nights grants 'Gold' status within the Hilton Honors scheme, which guarantees complimentary breakfast at any of the program's 10,000 hotels.

Burgess highlighted this guaranteed benefit as a significant advantage for new members, contrasting it with other schemes where perks may be subject to availability. To earn the full bonus points and qualifying nights, however, users must spend £2,500 in foreign currency within the first six months of opening the account, a requirement that may only be met by frequent travellers or those undertaking extended holidays. The card carries an annual fee of £150, with the bonus points valued at approximately £165.

Marriott Bonvoy Premium Debit Card

Similar to Hilton, Marriott Bonvoy provides two card options, standard and premium, also issued by Currensea. The Marriott Bonvoy Premium card offers 40,000 bonus points upon spending £3,000 in foreign currency within the first 12 months. This offer requires card applications before 4 p.m. on September 15. While the spending timeline is longer than Hilton's, it remains a target likely achievable primarily by frequent travellers.

The points earned can contribute towards free nights, with the option to combine points and cash for bookings. The card grants 'Gold' status, but associated perks such as late check-out and room upgrades are subject to availability rather than being guaranteed.

The annual fee for the Marriott Bonvoy Premium card is £175, with the bonus points valued at around £200.

IHG One Rewards and Revolut Partnership

The IHG One Rewards debit card operates differently, requiring customers to sign up for the digital bank Revolut. This necessitates a greater commitment from users, although earning the bonus points may be more straightforward. The offer, valid until August 25, provides 30,000 IHG One Rewards points and 15 elite night credits when spending £3,000 within the first three months.

This card provides Platinum status, though benefits like upgrades and early check-in are subject to availability. A key distinction is that the £3,000 spending requirement can be met through UK transactions, unlike the foreign currency requirement for the Hilton and Marriott cards. However, the need to use Revolut and the associated high annual fee of £216 (£18 per month) may deter casual users. A free option is available, offering 10,000 points for spending £1,000 in the first three months, which could be a more accessible entry point for those wishing to explore hotel loyalty schemes and Revolut simultaneously.
