Horizon Organic Dairy has initiated a voluntary recall of more than 53,000 cases of its shelf-stable 1% chocolate milk due to packaging issues that could result in spoilage. The recall, which began on August 7, was prompted by consumer complaints regarding bloated cartons, leaks, and premature spoilage.

Kendra Harrison, Horizon's head of quality and food safety, clarified that the recall is not due to contamination by allergens, pathogens, or microorganisms. The affected products are 8-ounce cartons sold in the United States, specifically in 12-packs and 18-packs, with best-by dates extending through January 2027. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the packaging malfunction.

Horizon advises consumers to discard the affected milk and contact the company for a refund. This marks the second recall for Horizon Organic's chocolate milk this year. In March, over 3,500 cases of its 1% DHA Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk were recalled for similar packaging seal issues.

Earlier this year, some consumers reported experiencing issues with Horizon's chocolate milk, describing it as "chunky" and unappetizing, even when not past its expiration date. While there is no direct indication that these specific complaints are related to the current recall, some customers who experienced the issue reported contacting Horizon and providing product codes. These consumers did not consume the milk after observing its condition.
