Olivia Tilley, a 30-year-old Sydney resident, has transformed an unusual incident involving her spoodle, Piper, into a successful pet fragrance and grooming brand called Pawfumery. The business, launched in mid-2024, was conceived after Piper rolled in a shattered bottle of high-end Le Labo Santal perfume, leaving the dog smelling surprisingly pleasant.
What began as a passion project has evolved into a significant income stream, with Pawfumery generating as much as $5,000 on its best online sales days, particularly after promotions within online dog owner groups. The brand also sells at Sydney markets and through wholesale customers, with a growing presence in the United States, especially in New York and Boston.
Tilley, who previously worked as a director in contract manufacturing for private-label skincare and fragrance, invested $15,000 of her savings into Pawfumery. This initial investment covered laboratory testing, formula development, and ensuring product stability and safety for dogs. The development of the perfume spritz was particularly challenging, as Tilley aimed to replicate a luxury fragrance experience while formulating it differently from human perfumes. The water-based spritz avoids high ethanol content, which can dry out a dog's skin and coat.
Prior to Pawfumery, Tilley managed a demanding role that often left her prioritizing her employees' pay over her own earnings. She sought a more positive and enjoyable venture outside her high-pressure day job. The dog fragrance concept offered a fun escape and a potential source of additional income.
The business currently offers four fragrances, with plans to expand to eight this year, in addition to dog washes and its signature perfume spritzes. Tilley initially focused on wholesale but found direct-to-customer sales through markets more fulfilling and less stressful. She continues to work in digital marketing by day, dedicating her evenings and weekends to Pawfumery.
The timing of Pawfumery's success aligns with Tilley and her fiancé James' plans for an elaborate three-day wedding celebration in May 2027. The couple is planning a $130,000 event with a
