Several major cruise lines have recently increased their daily gratuity fees, adding potentially hundreds of dollars to the cost of family vacations. Popular lines including Carnival, Princess, and Celebrity have raised these automatic charges, which are distributed to crew members.

Carnival Cruise Line increased its daily tip rate by $1 in April, setting the charge at $17 per person per day for standard staterooms and $19 per day for suites. The company stated that its team members provide exceptional service and that the increase was well-deserved. Princess Cruises raised its gratuity rates in March to between $18 and $20 per person per day, citing a desire for greater consistency in the booking process and alignment with industry practices. Celebrity Cruises followed suit in July, increasing its daily gratuity by $1.50, bringing the fee range to between $19.50 and $24.50 per person per day.

These automatic charges, often referred to as crew appreciation fees, can significantly impact the total cost of a cruise. Travel experts note that for a family of four on a seven-day cruise, these fees could add up to approximately $500, and in some cases, up to $700. Some passengers have expressed frustration on social media, feeling these charges are becoming a substantial, unexpected part of the overall vacation expense.

Despite the automatic nature of these fees, passengers have the option to decline them or adjust the amounts. On Carnival, Princess, and Celebrity, guests can visit the guest services desk on the first day of their cruise to opt out of the automatic gratuities. Disney Cruise Line charges a prepaid gratuity of $14.50 per night per guest, with a similar option for passengers to choose to pay on the last night of the cruise. Disney specifies that this fee is for crew members who directly interact with guests, such as dining servers and stateroom hosts.

While the increases may be unwelcome, some experts suggest the anger is sometimes misplaced, as crew members provide services around the clock. However, the issue of transparency is frequently raised, with suggestions that cruise lines should clearly present the total cost, including service charges, before passengers commit to a fare. Travel advisors recommend that consumers carefully review the fine print for all expected payments before finalizing a booking.
