Burger King inadvertently gave away thousands of free Whopper meals due to an app glitch that allowed customers to add unlimited extra burgers to a promotional meal at no additional cost. The promotion, which had been running periodically for years, allowed users to add extra burgers to the "two for £12 Whopper meal" for free.
The issue came to light when a customer, Paul Martin, attempted to notify the fast-food chain about the bug on October 30. After receiving no response through the usual channels, Martin posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he had successfully purchased 18 Whoppers, 18 portions of fries, and 18 drinks from a London branch for £26.54, a price significantly lower than the usual £188.82.
His post, which garnered over 1.6 million views and nearly 5,000 likes, prompted a swift response from Burger King. The company acknowledged the issue and stated they would investigate. Within three hours of Martin's public complaint, the error was removed from the app.
Martin reported that he had made multiple attempts to contact Burger King about the error via their website, email, and social media in the preceding week without a reply. The incident led to various reactions on social media, with users humorously commenting on the scale of the giveaway and Martin's decision to report the glitch. The Daily Mail has approached Burger King for comment.
