Hangry Planet, which claims to be the first all-vegan gas station in the United States, has been sold for $12 million. The San Bruno, California-based convenience store, which opened in 2022, offered a range of plant-based items including eggless breakfast sandwiches and vegan hot chocolate.

Founder Bobak Bakhtiari was motivated to create the unique business after learning about dairy farming practices. He aimed to provide convenient food options without supporting what he described as animal abuse. Bakhtiari chose the San Francisco Bay Area for the store's launch, citing the region's existing popularity with plant-based diets.

Initially, the transition to an all-vegan menu caused a 20% drop in sales, but the business eventually saw a 30% increase. The unconventional concept attracted customers, including those who drove electric vehicles and traveled from afar for the vegan offerings.

Beyond its food selection, Hangry Planet also featured a distinctive exterior with large roof sculptures and an immersive virtual reality car wash.

Bakhtiari is reportedly planning to operate a franchise location for Unburger, a Midwest-based vegan fast-food chain. The California Post has reached out to Hangry Planet for further comment regarding the store's future.
