Zimbabwean Tycoon, Wife Die in Helicopter Crash

A helicopter crash near Harare, Zimbabwe, on Wednesday killed businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife, and four other individuals. The accident has prompted an investigation into its cause, with preliminary observations suggesting the aircraft hit the ground and ignited surrounding grass. Officials are examining a black box recovered from the wreckage.

Chivayo, 43, was known for his opulent lifestyle and cultivation of close relationships with political leaders across Africa, including Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan, Uganda's Yoweri Museveni, and Nigeria's Bola Tinubu. He frequently posted images and videos of his encounters with these heads of state, as well as of his significant charitable donations and gifts of luxury vehicles and cash.

Mnangagwa expressed shock at Chivayo's death, calling him "consummately philanthropic." Ruto described Chivayo as a "dear friend."

Chivayo's public image was marked by widespread online displays of wealth, including Rolls-Royces, private aircraft, and multi-million dollar gifts. He also received several government contracts, some of which had previously faced controversy or allegations of fraud that were ultimately dismissed.

While some Zimbabweans celebrated Chivayo's death on social media, citing anger over the country's economic struggles and allegations surrounding his business dealings, others condemned the reaction. Opposition lawmaker Chalton Hwende criticized the celebrations, stating, "What kind of people are we who celebrate someone’s death? It’s un-African."
