Authorities in Zimbabwe are continuing their search for victims of a ferry disaster on Lake Kariba, where the death toll has risen to at least 84. The overloaded vessel capsized last week amid strong waves.

As of Sunday, police reported that 12 more bodies had been recovered, increasing the toll from 72 the previous day. Zimbabwe's disaster management agency stated that 77 people were rescued. Initial estimates suggested as many as 153 passengers were on board a ferry authorized to carry 90 people, though officials now indicate the number could be even higher.

The ferry was en route from Kariba town to remote fishing communities in the country's northwest, an area where damaged roads and scarce public transportation often necessitate water travel. Among the deceased are 18 children, including a 1-year-old.

Lake Kariba, a man-made reservoir on the Zambezi River, is one of the world's largest lakes by volume. The border between Zimbabwe and Zambia runs through the center of the lake.
