World's Smallest Penguins Fly to Spain for New Colony

Thirteen fairy penguins have embarked on a journey from SEA LIFE Weymouth in Dorset, England, to SEA LIFE Benalmádena in southern Spain. The penguins, some of the world's smallest, were issued passports and boarding passes for their transatlantic flight as part of an initiative to create a second colony of the species.

The facility in Spain has constructed a new enclosure for the penguins, designed to mimic their native habitat in New Zealand with sandy terrain, caves, and ample water features. Seven smaller nesting caves have been added to support breeding pairs.

Before their departure, the penguins underwent comprehensive health checks, including tests for avian influenza and Newcastle disease, to ensure their fitness for travel. They were transported in custom-built crates designed with ventilation and space, with each bird accompanied by its closest companion for comfort during the journey. The penguins traveled from Weymouth to Heathrow Airport before boarding their flight to Madrid.

This relocation is part of SEA LIFE's broader commitment to species protection, aiming to address the increasing pressures faced by wild fairy penguin populations due to climate change. By establishing a new colony, the organization hopes to advance penguin research and conservation efforts, while also raising public awareness about the challenges these animals encounter in their natural environment.

"This is an incredibly exciting milestone not just for SEA LIFE, but for penguin conservation, research, and education around the world," said Seb Webster, General Manager at SEA LIFE Weymouth. "These little birds have captured the hearts of our guests and teams for years, so while it's emotional to say goodbye to some of them, we're thrilled they'll be helping establish a thriving second colony in Spain. We're proud to play a part in protecting the future of this amazing species through international collaboration and world-class animal care."
