Paulo Gabriel da Silva Barros and Katyucia Lie Hoshino, who hold the Guinness World Record for the shortest married couple, have opened their specially adapted home to TLC cameras for the new series "Most Extreme Humans." The couple, both individuals with dwarfism, have made extensive modifications to their residence in Itapeva, São Paulo, Brazil, to ensure everyday tasks are manageable.
Standing at a combined height of 71.42 inches, Barros, 40, and Hoshino, 36, have altered nearly every aspect of their home. These modifications include lowering door handles and light switches, installing custom countertops, and creating accessible storage solutions. Their kitchen underwent the most significant transformation, with traditional cupboards replaced by easy-to-reach pull-out drawers and open shelving. They also incorporated a shallow custom sink and a lower stovetop to facilitate cooking together.
"Now comes the coolest part of the kitchen: the sink," Barros stated in the episode, explaining its design for easier dishwashing. Lightweight plastic step stools are available to reach higher shelves, and a lower laundry sink and custom office furniture are also part of the home's adaptations.
Hoshino described their home as a "safe haven," noting, "When we left our home, we had to adjust to the world to fit in. In our house, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, it was the opposite. It was the people who had to adapt to us."
The couple's journey to marriage began online over a decade ago. Despite an initial period where Hoshino ignored Barros's messages, they eventually fell in love. They married in London in 2016, after eight years together, at which point Guinness officials certified them as the world's shortest married couple, taking the title from a previous Brazilian record-holding couple.
The TLC series "Most Extreme Humans" profiles individuals with rare conditions, including a Filipino man with unusually large hands and a man with a backward spine. The documentary offers a glimpse into the lives and adaptations of Barros and Hoshino, highlighting their creative solutions for daily living.
