Woman Recounts 'Horror Movie' Attack on Husband Amid Paris Riots
A French resident described the terrifying moments her husband was beaten by a mob while trying to help a friend during recent unrest in Paris.
A French woman has described the brutal attack on her husband by a mob of rioters in Paris, recounting the incident as akin to a "horror movie." Almudena Garcia told "America's Newsroom" that the terrifying event unfolded quickly in the center of the city.
Garcia stated that she and her husband were in Paris when they heard screaming and witnessed friends being attacked by a group of individuals. Her husband intervened to help his friends, but the situation escalated rapidly. "There were five at the beginning and four or five more just arrived in two seconds, so I just saw my husband being beat up by 10 individuals," Garcia said.
During the assault, Garcia screamed for help, fearing for her husband's safety. She recounted that two waiters from a nearby restaurant intervened, pulling her husband inside. However, some members of the attacking group followed them into the restaurant and continued the assault.
"Thanks to the waiters, they could finally get them [the rioters] out ... and I got into the restaurant, and I just saw my husband all covered in blood ... It was very, very scary," she added.
The attack occurred amidst weeks of unrest across France. These protests, which initially focused on poor school conditions, have broadened to include grievances over the rising cost of living. Some demonstrations have devolved into violence, with reports of rioters clashing with police, looting businesses, and damaging public property.
Paris has been a focal point for some of the most intense violence, with social media videos showing groups damaging property in the capital and other major cities. Authorities have since implemented curfews in certain areas of Paris and other affected cities, leading to a decrease in street violence, according to The Associated Press. Officials are preparing for further demonstrations.
