Woman Killed in Shark Attack Off South African Coast
A 65-year-old woman was fatally attacked by a shark while swimming at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, prompting local authorities to close nearby beaches.

A fatal shark attack occurred Tuesday morning at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, South Africa, claiming the life of a 65-year-old woman. The incident prompted the municipality to close adjacent beaches and issue a warning for the public to avoid the water.
Police were called to the scene around 7:00 a.m. local time, where they discovered the body of the victim, identified locally as Janine Lochrenberg, a retired nuclear radiographer. She had sustained severe injuries.
According to local media reports and a community group, Lochrenberg was a regular swimmer and was in the water with a group when the attack happened. Other swimmers reportedly saw a shark's tail and fin before the incident. The victim suffered significant injuries to her right arm and leg.
Fatal shark attacks are rare globally, but South Africa's extensive coastline has seen deadly encounters in the past. Globally, there were 65 unprovoked shark bites in 2025, an increase from 47 in the previous year, resulting in nine fatalities. One of these fatalities occurred in South Africa, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File.
Researchers suggest that factors such as increasing coastal populations, greater use of marine environments, environmental changes, and shifts in shark and prey distribution can influence the frequency of such encounters.
