Woman Found Dead on Channel Island; Man Arrested for Murder
A 34-year-old mother of two was discovered at the base of cliffs on Alderney, leading to the arrest of a 44-year-old man.
Guernsey Police have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the death of a 34-year-old mother of two whose body was found at the base of cliffs on the Channel Island of Alderney. The victim has been identified as Hannah Benfield.
Benfield's body was discovered in the sea on the western end of Alderney on Monday. Emergency services, including an RNLI lifeboat, were dispatched after a report was received late Sunday night. A sighting of a person in the water at the base of cliffs known as The Guns was reported by Channel Islands Air Search early Monday morning. A joint rescue operation confirmed a woman deceased.
The arrested man, initially receiving hospital treatment, is now in police custody. Authorities stated that this is the first suspected murder case on Alderney in 30 years. The island, home to approximately 2,167 residents, is described as a small, close-knit community, and the impact of such an incident is significant.
Alderney, the most northerly of the Channel Islands, is located about 20 miles off the coast of Guernsey and is known for its natural beauty, coastline, beaches, and wildlife. The island also has a history of military fortifications.
Local officials and clergy expressed shock and sadness. Alderney vicar Mother Samantha Martell told the BBC that the incident has 'shaken' the community and emphasized the need for residents to support one another. Derwent Smithurst, a member of the island's legislature, described the news as 'shocking' and highlighted the community's strength.
Guernsey Police confirmed they are not seeking other suspects and do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the wider community. Investigators are seeking dashcam footage from vehicles that may have been traveling on Rue De Longis or other parts of the west of the island between 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Sunday, September 27.
Specialist family liaison officers have been working with Ms. Benfield's family since the rescue operation concluded. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Police extended their condolences to the family and all those affected by the incident.
