A 67-year-old woman has died after being caught in flash flooding in Majorca, Spain. The incident occurred in Felanitx on Wednesday afternoon when the woman reportedly slipped and fell into a street inundated with water. She became trapped beneath a car as the intense current surged down the street, preventing her from escaping.
Local media reported that the water level beneath the vehicle was approximately two hand spans deep. Bystanders discovered the woman without a pulse and immediately alerted emergency services. Local police and the Civil Guard responded to the scene. A police investigation into the incident has been initiated, and a forensic examination is underway.
Officials from the Balearic Government expressed their condolences. Marga Prohens, the president of the Balearic Government, stated on social media platform X, "Saddened by the death of a woman in Felanitx during the episode of rain and storms that has affected our islands today. My condolences and support to her family and loved ones in these painful moments." Former president Francina Armengol also offered her sympathies, writing, "The worst news reaches us today from Felanitx, in the midst of this episode of rain and storms. All my affection to the victim's family and friends during these very painful moments."
The fatal incident follows a red alert issued for Majorca due to hours of intense storms and flooding. The severe weather caused trees to fall and led to road closures. The road connecting the capital Palma to Valldemosa was shut for several hours so that firefighters could clear a large fallen tree from the roadway. Majorca Airport also experienced temporary operational suspensions for security reasons, resulting in flight delays.
This event echoes a previous tragedy last month in Roda de Berà, on Spain's east coast, where a mother and daughter died during storms. They were fatally injured when a wall collapsed on them in the town marina amid heavy rainfall and later succumbed to their injuries at a medical center.
