Woman Charged in Death of Newborn Found in Sydney Bin
Police arrested a 24-year-old woman who is believed to be the mother of an infant discovered in a garbage bag at an apartment complex.
A 24-year-old woman, believed to be the mother of a newborn baby found dead in a bin, has been charged by New South Wales police. The infant boy was discovered naked inside a rubbish bag in an apartment block bin on Harrow Road at Auburn, in Sydney's west, on August 31 by a local resident.
NSW police had issued an appeal to locate the baby's mother, stating their primary concern was ensuring she received medical attention. Over two weeks after the discovery, police identified the 24-year-old woman believed to be the infant's mother.
She was taken to a hospital for assessment and was subsequently arrested upon her release on Thursday evening. Following her arrest, she was taken to Auburn Police Station. The woman has been charged with 'mother alone concealing birth by disposing [of] body'. She was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Local Court in October.
Auburn Police Area Acting Commander Darren Sly stated that it was believed the baby had been in the bin for up to 36 hours. 'It's sad and a horrific set of circumstances,' he told reporters on the day the boy was found.
