Woman Allegedly Stabbed on Melbourne Tram in Random Attack
A 51-year-old woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being allegedly attacked by a stranger while disembarking a tram in South Melbourne.
A woman was allegedly stabbed in the neck by a stranger while getting off a tram in South Melbourne on Tuesday. The 51-year-old victim was reportedly attacked with a kitchen utensil, possibly a fork or knife, around midday.
Police responded to the incident, which halted a tram on Eastern Road near Kings Way. A 37-year-old man, who has no fixed address, was arrested a short distance from the scene. He was being interviewed by police on Tuesday afternoon, and no charges had been laid by 6 p.m.
Paramedics treated the woman at the scene before transporting her to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The attack is believed to have been random.
Witnesses described the incident as "very scary" and expressed concerns about safety in the inner-city area. "What's going on in Melbourne? Why are people doing that? It's scary for kids, too," one witness, Celeste Hall, told the Herald Sun. "I've got two kids, they catch the tram to school. But you don't know what's going to happen."
Another witness, Liz Oxenbury, stated that the attack made her "scared to catch a tram." Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has further information to contact Crime Stoppers.
