Wildfires are sweeping across France and Spain, forcing the evacuation of more than 300,000 residents and raising serious concerns for the city of Bordeaux. Firefighters in southwestern France describe themselves as "overwhelmed" by the scale of the infernos, which have created their own weather patterns and stretched fire fronts for more than 20 kilometers.
The Bordeaux Council is now contemplating a complete evacuation of the city, which has a population of over 270,000, as smoke billows into its streets, raising fears of respiratory problems for residents. The Bordeaux Métropole urban area encompasses 28 connected towns and over 830,000 people.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated Sunday that the wildfire situation in the Gironde region remains "very unfavorable." A significant deployment of resources, including 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, and 1,200 police, is engaged in combating the blazes. An A400M military transport aircraft has joined 18 water-dropping planes and helicopters in what is expected to be a "long and very difficult" battle.
Escalating Fire Situation
In France, an additional 55,000 people were ordered to evacuate late Sunday, bringing the total displaced in the Gironde region to 250,000. The French government has characterized the situation as "totally unprecedented." The final leg of the Tour de France was shortened to allow security forces to be redeployed to affected areas.
In Spain, the wildfires have claimed at least one life, with a man in his 70s found deceased in a car near Valencia. The weather conditions have been described as "absolutely difficult," with wind gusts pushing flames south. Nearly 60,000 people have been evacuated from the Madrid and Ávila regions, while over 28,000 remain confined to their homes. Eight municipalities near Toledo were also ordered to evacuate.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that 130,000 hectares have been burned in Spain, exceeding the annual average of 100,000 hectares. In France, 98,000 hectares have been consumed by fire.
Wildfires have also impacted other regions, including Sicily, Italy, where over 350 fires ignited, and the Cairngorms National Park in the UK, which has been burning for 11 days and was declared a major incident Friday.
