British Columbia has declared a state of emergency as the Bald Range wildfire continues to rage out of control, spreading over more than 39 square miles (103 sq km). The fire has caused significant destruction, with Premier David Eby reporting that homes and properties have been lost and some individuals required rescue as conditions rapidly changed.

"A fire official had likened the fire to 'a bomb going off'," Eby stated during a news conference on Saturday. The state of emergency grants the provincial government special powers, including the ability to implement travel restrictions, protect supplies from price gouging, and allocate additional resources for rescue coordination.

The wildfire has triggered the largest evacuation event of the summer in British Columbia, forcing more than 20,000 people to flee their homes. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes confirmed that many farms have been affected and the full extent of structural losses is still being assessed as firefighting efforts continue.

Interior Health, a regional health authority, is relocating hundreds of residents from care facilities, including senior housing, in Summerland to safer locations. Summerland has a population of approximately 12,000, while Peachland is home to about 6,500 residents, according to the 2021 census. The sheer scale and speed of the fire have left officials warning residents to "brace for the worst."
