A Welsh rugby player died three weeks after suffering severe head and brain injuries from an alleged assault by a security guard in a Turkish bar while on holiday. Scot James, 34, from Maesteg, was on vacation when the incident occurred in the early hours of July 5.
An inquest was told that Mr. James was involved in a verbal exchange when he was punched once by a security guard. The impact caused him to fall and strike his head, leading to traumatic injuries. He received initial treatment in Turkey before being repatriated to the UK.
Despite subsequent care at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, Mr. James died on July 26. A post-mortem examination conducted on August 3 provided a provisional cause of death as blunt head injury, including fractures to the skull and contusions to the brain, pending further histology.
Authorities in Turkey are reportedly investigating the incident, with assistance from the Foreign Office. The area coroner, Rachel Knight, ordered a full inquest due to suspicion that Mr. James's death may have been unnatural. A mention hearing is scheduled in four months to receive an update, and the inquest proceedings may be paused pending the outcome of the criminal investigation in Turkey.
Mr. James, who played for Maesteg Celtic RFC, was remembered by his club as an "outstanding player and a great character." His family described him as a "loving father, son, grandson and partner," whose "kindness and loyalty touched countless lives." They expressed profound grief, stating, "No words can truly express the pain we are experiencing or the void his passing has left in our lives."
