Veteran South African Broadcaster Owen Ndlovu Found Dead After Abduction
Ndlovu was kidnapped by armed men near Johannesburg and his body was later discovered with apparent gunshot wounds.
Veteran South African broadcaster Owen Ndlovu has been found dead with apparent gunshot wounds, hours after he was abducted by armed men near Johannesburg. His body was discovered by residents beside a road in Thokoza, a township adjacent to Katlehong.
Provincial police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated that Ndlovu was abducted as he was about to pick up his wife from a religious service. Three unknown men approached the couple, pushed the wife aside, and forced Ndlovu into the back of their vehicle, a Ford Raptor pick-up truck. The suspects then drove off with him.
The vehicle was later found abandoned in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. A bag belonging to Ndlovu was found a few meters from his body. Police have opened a murder investigation, and a post-mortem examination will determine the official cause of death.
Family spokesperson Eugene Mthethwa described the loss as "devastating" and expressed gratitude for the assistance from residents, police, and the public who searched for Ndlovu after news of his disappearance broke.
Ndlovu, 54, was a well-known figure in South African sports broadcasting, having worked for years as a presenter and producer at the SABC. He was also involved in radio coverage of the country's Premier Soccer League and later became an advocate for musicians' rights and royalty payments. He was associated with Artists United and the SABC Summer Song of the Year initiative.
Fellow journalist Lelo Mzaca remembered Ndlovu for his "colourful, energetic life," noting his enthusiasm and flair in sports broadcasting. "South Africa has lost a unique and spirited individual whose light shone brightly while it lasted," Mzaca said in a tribute.
The provincial government has appealed to the community to assist the police with their investigation, emphasizing that tackling crime remains a priority. The incident has renewed attention on violent crime in South Africa, where armed robberies and vehicle hijackings are significant concerns. National police statistics from April to June 2026 indicated over 5,000 murders and nearly 4,000 carjackings during that period. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia previously stated that serious crimes create fear and are sometimes carried out by "organized, heavily armed criminal groups that operate with planning and sophistication."
