Seventeen people were injured, one critically, when a car plowed through fans celebrating Mexico's World Cup victory in Cabo San Lucas on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. local time in a popular tourist area.
The celebrations followed Mexico's 3-0 win over Czechia in their final group stage game, which prompted thousands of fans to take to the streets.
In a video circulating on social media, a black car is seen accelerating into a densely packed crowd. Some fans were seen chasing after the vehicle, while others rushed to assist those who had been struck.
Authorities detained the driver at the scene. The driver stated that fans had blocked his path and applied physical pressure to his car, prompting him to drive through the crowd. No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
The Mexican Football Federation expressed regret over the incident, calling for authorities to clarify the events and assign responsibility. The local government of Los Cabos stated its solidarity with the victims and pledged support and cooperation with the investigation.
This incident echoes a similar event from the previous week, when a pickup truck driver struck a group of celebrating fans in Chihuahua City after Mexico's win over South Korea.
