In a striking display of community cooperation, a van driver in Guildford assisted Surrey Police in apprehending a suspected shoplifter. The incident, which occurred on Woking Road, saw the driver offer a police officer a ride to help catch a suspect who had fled the scene on a bicycle.
Footage captured the moment PC Sperling was in pursuit of the suspect on foot. As the chase unfolded, a grey van pulled alongside the officer, with the driver offering a lift. This timely intervention allowed the officer and driver to gain on the fleeing cyclist. The van managed to pull ahead of the suspect, enabling PC Sperling to disembark and make the arrest.
Surrey Police acknowledged the assistance on social media, stating, "Big thanks to the Good Samaritan who gave our officer a lift during a foot chase for a suspected shoplifter on Tuesday! Officers were on Woking Road in Guildford when they spotted someone suspected of stealing from a nearby shop. The suspect had made off on a bicycle with PC Sperling giving chase on foot when a friendly van driver intervened to offer a lift. Working together, the van driver and officer were able to spot where the suspect had gone and get ahead of him, allowing PC Sperling to jump out and make the arrest. Teamwork makes the dream work."
This incident echoes similar instances where civilian assistance has aided law enforcement. In September, a woman provided a lift to an officer pursuing a suspect in South Wales, which led to an arrest. Earlier in August, a police officer in Twickenham borrowed a member of the public's bicycle to continue a chase after his patrol car could not navigate a towpath.
