Undercover police intercepted a vehicle at a Melbourne service station on Saturday, bringing an alleged five-day crime spree to an end. The incident occurred at a Tarneit service station in the city's west as one passenger was reportedly filling up the car.
CCTV footage captured the moment two unmarked police SUVs arrived, blocking the allegedly stolen Hyundai on both ends. The passenger scrambled back into the vehicle as officers emerged. The driver attempted to evade capture, moving the car back and forth, while officers attempted to open the doors. A third unmarked police car arrived and blocked the vehicle, preventing its escape.
Authorities reported that a knife and a balaclava were seized from the vehicle. Six people, ranging in age from 14 to 22, have been charged in connection with the events. The group is accused of carrying out multiple home invasions in the suburbs of Lalor, Tarneit, and Truganina over a five-day period.
One victim, Awais Ayyaz, whose home was allegedly targeted, described the ordeal as terrifying. He stated that his keys and wallet were taken and subsequently used at various locations. Ayyaz also reported that his bank account was allegedly drained of approximately $1,000. His wife, Hira Khan, mentioned that their daughter had become fearful of intruders, keeping a box near the front door for protection.
Three of the six individuals apprehended have since been released on bail.
