A 23-year-old Ukrainian woman who had arrived in the United States seeking refuge from war was stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail train on Aug. 22, authorities said, and a suspect has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police identified the victim as Iryna Zarutska and the suspect as 35-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. Police said video from the train shows a man watching Zarutska after she sat down, then drawing a blade and attacking her from behind. Brown was arrested soon after the incident and a judge subsequently denied bond; he remains in custody.

Police and local media said the attack occurred shortly after Zarutska boarded a South End light rail train in Charlotte. Video released or described by officials shows the attacker approaching and stabbing the woman while she was seated and using a mobile phone. The footage, as described by authorities, shows the man leaving a trail of blood through the train car and removing his shirt after the assault. Other passengers initially did not appear to realize what had occurred, police said.

Authorities described Brown as homeless and said he has an extensive criminal history, including a prior arrest for assault involving a family member. Officials have charged him with first-degree murder; details of the charging documents and any additional counts were not released by police in initial reports.

Zarutska’s family said in a GoFundMe post that she had arrived in the United States in 2022 seeking safety from the war in Ukraine and was "hoping for a new beginning" when she was killed. The fundraising page was set up by relatives to help with funeral expenses and related costs, according to the post.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police did not immediately provide additional details on a possible motive or a timeline for prosecutors to file formal charges beyond the first-degree murder count. Investigators have not publicly identified any witnesses who have come forward with information since the arrest; police said the arrest was made soon after officers responded to the scene.

The fatal attack has drawn attention to public transit safety in Charlotte, where the light rail system serves commuters and residents across the city. City officials and transit authorities did not immediately respond to requests for comment on security measures aboard trains following the incident.

The case remains under investigation. Prosecutors will determine whether to seek additional charges as officials review evidence, including train surveillance footage and witness statements, police said. Court records indicate Brown is being held without bond pending further legal proceedings.
