UK Weather: Cooler Air and Rain to End Warm Spell
Temperatures are set to fall across the UK as cloud and rain sweep in from the north-west, marking a noticeable shift to autumn.
Cooler air is expected to move across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, bringing an end to the recent spell of unusually warm weather. This shift will be accompanied by rain and stronger winds, signaling a more definitive arrival of autumn.
Temperatures, which had reached the low 20s Celsius in many areas, are forecast to drop to the mid-teens. Wednesday could mark the first day since early June where temperatures do not exceed 20C anywhere in the country.
Noticeable Change to October's Start
On Tuesday, cloud, rain, and stronger winds that have been affecting Scotland and Northern Ireland will spread southward. While parts of the south-east of England might still see highs of 19-21C, northern and western regions will experience much cooler conditions, with temperatures mainly in the low to mid-teens. This change will be particularly evident after a warm start to October, with Monday offering a final taste of summer-like weather for southern and central England and Wales.
Temperatures Fall Further
By Wednesday, the autumn chill is expected to be firmly established nationwide. Cooler north-westerly winds will bring sunshine interspersed with scattered showers. However, south-eastern England and East Anglia could experience heavy and persistent rain for a time. Daytime temperatures are predicted to fall into the mid-teens across much of England and Wales, with highs in Scotland potentially reaching only 10-13C. The wind will also contribute to a colder feel, especially in eastern coastal areas.
Brief Cool Snap
Thursday is expected to start chilly, with potential for mist, fog, and frost in some rural northern areas. However, an area of high pressure moving across the UK is likely to bring some sunshine during the day. Temperatures in southern areas may reach around 14-16C, while Scotland could see highs of only 10-12C. By Friday, Atlantic weather systems are anticipated to bring further rain and stronger winds, though temperatures are expected to recover slightly to around 16-18C across much of the south.
The cooler weather is predicted to be short-lived, with temperatures expected to return to average, or even slightly above, over the weekend and into the following week. This week's temperature drop is likely to be the most significant indication that autumn has finally arrived after an extended period of warmth.
