UK Warns Tourists of Protests in France
The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for France, urging caution due to ongoing demonstrations and potential disruptions.
The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning to British tourists planning travel to France this weekend, advising them to exercise caution amid escalating protests. The country has experienced several weeks of unrest, with demonstrations concerning public services, the cost of living, and food prices leading to riots and looting in Paris last weekend.
The Yellow Vest movement, alongside students and trade unions, plans to march in Paris on Saturday. The demonstrations are referred to as 'Act II' by organizers. The Yellow Vest movement, recognizable by its high-visibility vests, originally began in 2018, focusing on declining public services and rising living costs.
France's main student union, UNEF, has called for renewed rallies, despite President Emmanuel Macron's intention to meet with student representatives. Macron stated on Thursday that "illegitimate" protests would be prohibited, while actions organized by trade unions might be permitted but potentially rerouted.
The Foreign Office's updated travel advisory notes an "increased likelihood of demonstrations, political gatherings and marches taking place across France, sometimes at short notice." Tourists are advised to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid large crowds and significant police presences, and follow the guidance of local authorities. Disruptions to local transport and potential public safety measures, including localized curfews, are possible.
Last weekend saw significant unrest in cities including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Limoges, with police attempting to control violent protests. During these demonstrations, a British woman in Toulouse was reportedly injured by a projectile that caused severe damage to her calf. Local media reported that a piece of plastic became lodged in her knee, necessitating hospital treatment.
Tourists in Paris also witnessed the disruptions, with one river cruise on the Seine passing through areas affected by smoke and sirens amid the protests. Some businesses and museums may close to avoid being caught in the unrest.
