UK Supermarkets Revive Nostalgic School Puddings Amid Health Drive

British supermarkets are bringing back beloved school puddings from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s in response to growing nostalgia, even as schools in England prepare to implement stricter lunch guidelines. Tesco has launched a 'School Cakes & Custard' platter for £6.50, and Marks & Spencer is offering a Jam Roly Poly, a popular dessert from primary school menus.

These revivals come as England's Department of Education mandates changes to school lunches, aimed at combating childhood obesity. Starting next September, schools will be prohibited from serving deep-fried foods and must reduce the availability of sweetened, baked desserts. This follows earlier efforts, such as those championed by Jamie Oliver, which led to the removal of items like Turkey Twizzlers and chocolate concrete cake from school dinner menus.

Among the reintroduced nostalgic treats are Spotted Dick, a suet pudding with dried fruit, often served with custard; Manchester Tart, a jam-filled tart topped with coconut and a cherry; and Cornflake Tart, made with shortcrust pastry, jam, and cornflakes, typically served with custard.

Other classic school desserts making a comeback include Fairy Cakes, simple sponge cakes with icing and sprinkles; Blancmange, a milk-based molded dessert popular in the 1970s; Rice Pudding, a creamy rice-based dish enjoyed with various toppings; Ginger Pudding, a steamed sponge also known as 'nursery pudding' or 'telephone pudding'; Jam Roly-Poly, a steamed suet pastry rolled with jam; and Gypsy Tart, a tart made with evaporated milk and sugar.

These puddings were staples in British school kitchens for decades, evoking memories for many adults. Social media platforms have seen a resurgence in attempts to recreate these classic bakes, with users sharing their own versions and reminiscing about childhood school lunches.
