Northumbria Police responded to violent disorder and attacks on emergency services on the Meadow Well estate in North Shields on Thursday evening. Large crowds reportedly hurled bricks, missiles, and fireworks at police officers, who were establishing a barricade around a building that had been set on fire. Authorities stated the unrest was pre-arranged and stemmed from false rumors that the building was intended to house asylum seekers.

Police clarified that the site is planned for use as a supermarket, not a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) for asylum seekers, countering the misinformation that fueled the disorder. "We simply will not tolerate this behaviour – and it doesn’t belong within our neighbourhoods," Northumbria Police said in a social media statement. Officers are actively working to identify those responsible for the "completely unacceptable" actions.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness condemned the "minority of idiots" behind the violence, emphasizing the need to address the spread of dangerous misinformation. She also highlighted that the emergency services who were targeted "work every day to protect us" and "deserve better."

Due to the disorder, Meadow Well Metro station was temporarily closed. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

This incident echoes past unrest on the Meadow Well estate. In September 1991, riots broke out following the deaths of two individuals in a police pursuit, leading to widespread looting and arson across the estate. Thugs wrongly believed that the building would be used as a HMO to house asylum seekers
