UK Government Warns of High Risk in Middle East, Issues Travel Advisories for 16 Nations
The UK's Foreign Office has updated travel advice for 16 countries, citing the volatile Middle East situation and the potential for sudden escalation.
The UK Government has issued updated travel advice for 16 countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, warning of potential disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) shared the updates this week, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the region and the high risk of sudden escalation.
According to the FCDO statement, Iran has indicated its intention to target locations associated with the United States and Israel since the conflict began in early 2026. The advisory notes that strikes and retaliatory attacks have occurred across the region, affecting both civilian and US military infrastructure. British nationals in or planning to travel through the Middle East are advised to be prepared for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and general travel disruptions.
The revised advisories apply to Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Turkey, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia. These updates follow a period of increased regional hostility, particularly after strikes in Saudi Arabia attributed to Iran-backed Houthis, a Yemeni military group. The FCDO has advised against all travel to certain parts of Saudi Arabia.
Source notes indicate a resurgence of fighting between a Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis, with the latter launching missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia. King Khalid International Airport was reportedly struck by a missile on October 10, 2026, and remains at risk of further attacks. The Houthis have also targeted other locations in Saudi Arabia since July 13, with a heightened threat against airports, military and defense facilities, ports, and energy infrastructure in cities including Abha, Jizan, Najran, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Yanbu. Shipping in the Red Sea may also be affected, and further airport attacks and disruptions are considered very likely.
