Robert Bush, a 48-year-old British funeral director, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of disturbing crimes committed over 12 years at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. The sentencing at Hull Crown Court followed a five-day hearing where over 200 victims detailed the profound impact of his actions.
Bush pleaded guilty to 67 charges. Among the offenses were providing bereaved families with the incorrect ashes of their cremated loved ones, improperly retaining corpses for months, and misappropriating charity donations collected at memorial services.
One victim, Jasmine Beverley, shared her experience of being given a small coffin with incorrect ashes for her stillborn son, Sunny, who died in May 2022. Investigators found her son's true ashes in a paper bag on the funeral home's floor more than a year later. Beverley described how the discovery reopened her trauma, causing intense grief, anxiety, and distress.
Approximately 50 families discovered they had received the wrong ashes when police raided the funeral home and found urns and packaging labeled with their relatives' names.
Authorities also revealed that Bush defrauded 172 individuals of 562,000 pounds (approximately $755,000), including through fraudulent funeral plans. He also collected cash donations for charities at memorial services but failed to transfer the funds.
The scale of the crimes came to light in March 2024 when Bush was on vacation in Arizona. He had asked directors at another funeral firm to manage a body recovery in his absence. A worker at Bush's funeral home then informed the other firm's directors that bodies had been stored on the premises for years. This led to a police investigation, which uncovered a scene described by prosecutors as a "horror scene," with decomposing bodies stored in a cold storage area and one naked corpse found on a stretcher on the floor.
