UK braces for two storms in quick succession
Storm Austen brings high winds and potential disruption, followed by Storm Boelo over the weekend.
The United Kingdom is preparing for a double dose of severe weather as Storm Austen is set to bring high winds to the southwest on Friday, immediately followed by another storm named Boelo expected over the weekend.
The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Plymouth, and parts of Devon. This warning is in effect from early Friday morning until 10 a.m. local time. Forecasters anticipate gusts widely reaching 60-70 mph, with some exposed locations possibly experiencing winds up to 80 mph.
These strong winds pose a significant risk of transport disruption, potential power cuts, and could cause damage to buildings, leading to flying debris. Yellow wind warnings are also in place for most of England and Wales, forecasting gusts of 45-60 mph, with some areas likely to see speeds of 70 mph.
While Storm Austen's winds are considerable, the most severe conditions are expected to affect areas to the south of the storm's low-pressure center. This includes northwest France, particularly Brittany, where gusts could approach 90 mph. The Channel Islands are also anticipating severe gales with gusts up to 80 mph, prompting the cancellation of some ferry services.
Adding to the unsettled weather, a new storm named Boelo is forecast to bring another round of stormy conditions to the UK over the weekend, following closely behind Austen.
