UK Braces for Dense Fog and Dangerous Driving Conditions

The United Kingdom is set to experience a shift in weather patterns, moving from recent stormy conditions to calmer periods characterized by increased mist and fog. This change, expected to begin Thursday, is likely to create dangerous driving conditions, particularly during morning commutes.

The transition follows a period of intense storms attributed to an active jet stream. As this weakens, high pressure is building, typically leading to more settled weather with lighter winds. However, this atmospheric shift in late autumn also brings the risk of mist, fog, low cloud, colder days, and frosty nights.

Thursday's Forecast

Wednesday is anticipated to start cooler than recent mornings, with showery rain primarily affecting southern Scotland, northern England, and north Wales. This precipitation is expected to move southeastward across Wales and into the Midlands before dissipating. The afternoon is forecast to be largely dry with sunny spells across most of the UK, with temperatures reaching between 12 to 16 degrees Celsius.

As winds diminish overnight into Thursday, mist and fog are predicted to develop, especially in east Wales, central, and southern England. This fog could become dense in certain areas, posing significant challenges for drivers during the morning rush hour. In some locations, the fog may persist until lunchtime.

Weekend Outlook and Beyond

Friday and Saturday may bring some rain to Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the northern parts of England and Wales. Concurrently, mist and fog are expected to re-form across eastern and southern England.

The establishment of high pressure over the weekend and into the following week suggests a continuation of these settled conditions. With light winds, mist and fog are likely to form during the nights and linger into the mornings. In some areas, this persistent low cloud and fog may prevent daytime temperatures from rising, leading to chilly conditions.

The lack of significant rainfall associated with this high-pressure system is also a concern, as some reservoirs in England and Wales remain exceptionally low despite receiving average rainfall in October. This pattern of dry, foggy, and settled weather is projected to continue for a substantial part of the first week of November.
