Britain is experiencing unseasonably high temperatures this autumn, making coastal walks a viable and appealing option. Despite the official start of the season, forecasts suggest a continuation of mild weather, prompting an analysis of the UK's best beaches for autumnal excursions.
Go Outdoors, a retail company, researched and ranked beaches based on Google reviews, sunshine hours, water quality, and beach award status. Factors such as temperature and autumn rainfall levels were also considered in their analysis.
Natalie Wolfenden, an expert from Go Outdoors, noted that "the UK is home to some stunning beaches that are at their most peaceful during the autumn months." She added, "While the weather is still relatively mild, it's the perfect time to enjoy long coastal walks away from the summer crowds."
Top Beach Destinations for Autumn Walks
Southwold Beach, Suffolk, was identified as the top beach for an autumn walk. This sandy and shingly beach, rated 4.7 out of five on Google, offers 5.9 average daily sunshine hours in autumn, with a median temperature of 12.5C. It holds a Blue Flag award and achieved a high water quality score of 9.46 out of ten.
Porthmeor Beach, Cornwall, secured a spot with its Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. It provides 5.1 hours of daily sunshine and temperatures around 13C. With a Google rating of 4.8, it is praised for its excellent water quality, making it suitable for swimming and other water activities.
In the North East, Tynemouth Longsands, Tyne and Wear, is a mile-long golden shoreline. This Blue Flag beach experiences average temperatures of 10.6C and notably low rainfall of 62mm during the autumn. It holds a Google rating of 4.8 and is recognized for its clean, spacious environment and accessible promenade.
West Wittering Beach, West Sussex, known for its natural beauty and clean environment, earned a score of 8.39 out of ten.
