UK battered by second major storm in days

The United Kingdom is enduring the impact of a second major storm this weekend, with Storm Boelo causing widespread travel disruptions and power outages across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England on Sunday.

The Met Office, the U.K.'s national weather service, has issued an amber wind warning, its second most severe alert, which is active across Scotland and the north of England until late Sunday. The agency warned of a danger to life from flying debris and crashing waves, urging people to stay indoors.

Gusts exceeding 80 mph (128 kph) have already been recorded in Scotland. Energy company SSEN reported approximately 93 unplanned power cuts in Scotland by Sunday morning. Flood warnings are also in effect, and disruptions have been reported across airports, ferries, railways, and roads.

Storm Boelo follows closely on the heels of Storm Austen, which impacted southern England on Friday. By Saturday evening, the National Grid reported that power had been restored to over 130,000 properties affected by Storm Austen.

The Met Office began naming major storms in 2015 to enhance public awareness of severe weather events. Storms are assigned names alphabetically throughout the season, which runs from September to August.
