UK Airports Dominate List of Europe's Most Stressful Flight Routes
Analysis of flight data reveals routes from London Heathrow and Manchester airports are most prone to delays and cancellations.
British travelers seeking a smooth journey may want to scrutinize their departure and arrival airports, as a new analysis highlights European flight routes most likely to cause travel stress. The study, by AirAdvisor, identified nearly half of the worst-ranking routes as featuring UK airports.
The 2026 Nervous Flyer Index examined 26 major European routes between September 2025 and August 2026, focusing on factors that can heighten passenger anxiety, including severe delays of over three hours, cancellations, weather exposure, and total flight duration. The ranking assesses potential travel stress rather than flight safety or turbulence.
London Heathrow and Manchester Airport emerged as central to several of Europe's most anxiety-provoking routes. Four routes involving British airports appeared in the top 10, with three linked to London Heathrow.
While the Amsterdam-Barcelona route scored highest overall for stress at 75.1 out of 100, Britain recorded the study's most extreme individual disruption figures. The Heathrow-Amsterdam route ranked second in Europe with a score of 63.8/100, driven by the highest cancellation rate of any route analyzed, at 3.69 percent. This is more than 2.5 times the average cancellation rate among the top 20 routes.
Mancaster to Dublin (MAN-DUB) secured the third spot with a score of 63.4/100. This route exhibited the most striking delay statistics, with 7.51 percent of flights delayed by over an hour and 0.84 percent delayed by more than three hours, both the highest rates within the top 20.
Two other Heathrow routes also made the top 10: Heathrow-Frankfurt at eighth place and Madrid-Heathrow at tenth.

- Madrid (MAD) to London Heathrow (LHR) — 40.8
Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, stated that the ranking's purpose is not to dictate which routes passengers should avoid but to highlight areas where uncertainty factors are more prevalent. This, he explained, allows travelers to plan accordingly and feel better prepared.
Across the 20 routes with the highest rankings, the average proportion of flights delayed by over an hour was 4.29 percent, with cancellations averaging 1.35 percent. The Heathrow-Amsterdam route's cancellation rate significantly exceeded this average, while Manchester-Dublin's rate of hour-plus delays was nearly double the top-20 average.
