China has evacuated more than 1.8 million people in anticipation of Typhoon Bavi's arrival. The storm is currently churning toward the major eastern city of Wenzhou.
Typhoon Bavi made its way to China after previously impacting Japan’s southern Sakishima island chain with heavy rain and strong winds. The typhoon also brushed past northern Taiwan.
While Bavi is gradually slowing and weakening as it moves northwest over cooler waters, it still poses a significant risk due to the large volume of moisture contained within its rain bands, which span a distance comparable to the length of France. To date, Japan and Taiwan have not reported any fatalities directly attributed to the typhoon. However, 17 deaths were reported in the Philippines, resulting from heavy rains exacerbated by the typhoon's influence on the southwest monsoon.
