A two-year-old girl died in hospital after officers were called to a house in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, on Saturday following concerns for her welfare, Cleveland Police said. The force is treating the death as unexplained and detectives have launched an investigation.

Police said officers attended a property on Hartington Close at about 4.20pm on Saturday, September 13, and the child was taken to hospital where she later died. "Our thoughts are with the family of the child during this very difficult time," a Cleveland Police spokesperson said.

A 25-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man have been arrested in connection with the child's death and are being questioned, the force said. No further details about the condition of either person or any charges were released. Detectives have retained a presence on the street while enquiries continue.

Officers were seen carrying out door-to-door enquiries and a forensic team in white overalls was observed taking interior and exterior photographs of the property, Cleveland Police said. The force asked members of the public not to speculate about the identities of those arrested or to name anyone online who they believed could be involved.

Police said inquiries remain ongoing and asked anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is being led by detectives from Cleveland Police.

The force did not release any further information about the cause of death. Police statements and the on-scene activity indicate the matter is under active criminal investigation rather than being treated as a sudden natural death, though no formal determination has been made public.
