Two workers have been rescued from a tunnel at a Nepali power plant, nine days after flash floods devastated the region. Officials reported pulling the workers from a small opening within the Trishul 3A tunnel.
Local television news broadcast images of one of the rescued workers, covered in mud, being carried from the site on a rescuer's shoulder. A medical team was attending to him at the location. The rescue occurred nine days after the August 26 floods, which are believed to have been caused by a glacier collapse and subsequently inundated towns and valleys across Nepal.
According to Nepal's disaster management agency, at least 1,259 people have died, and over 5,000 are still missing. On the Tibet side of the border, China reported 21 fatalities and 541 missing individuals as of late Wednesday.
Authorities in Nepal estimate that approximately 900 workers are unaccounted for across 12 hydropower projects, with around 500 believed to be trapped within tunnels.
