Two Romanian men have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a British woman in a hotel room on the Greek island of Zakynthos. The men, aged 19 and 28, are accused of attacking the 38-year-old woman in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Laganas area.
Both suspects have been transferred to the Prosecutor's Office of Zakynthos. The incident has brought attention to safety concerns for tourists on the popular island.
Earlier this month, Greek police addressed accusations of lax enforcement following claims by a hospital union. The head of the POEDIN hospital staff union, Michalis Giannakos, stated that medical facilities had seen a significant increase in attacks on tourists. He reported that staff had dealt with eight rape cases within a three-week period. Police, however, stated that only three rape cases involving tourists had been officially reported in the preceding three months, asserting their dedication to investigating all reports based on official data.
In a separate case earlier in August, police initiated an investigation into allegations that a tourism worker raped two British women, both 18, on Zakynthos. The women reported seeking hospital treatment and examination after the alleged attack and informed their families. The mother of one of the alleged victims traveled to Greece and located the accused man at his workplace, leading to an altercation that required police intervention. This investigation is ongoing.
