Two Renoir Paintings Recovered in Southern France

Two paintings by Auguste Renoir, stolen a month ago from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, have been recovered, local officials announced. The works, "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" (1910) and "Jeune fille au puits" (1886), were taken on September 8 when thieves broke into the museum, located on the French Riviera where the impressionist painter spent his final years.

Mayor Bryan Masson praised the authorities for the successful recovery, stating that the news brought immense joy and profound relief. "These two paintings are far more than works of art. They are part of our city's history, our cultural heritage and the legacy Auguste Renoir left to Cagnes-sur-Mer," Masson said.

Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft. The thieves reportedly used an electric saw to cut through frame mountings inside the museum. They initially absconded with four paintings but dropped two in the museum's garden while fleeing.

The Renoir Museum, which opened in 1960, houses 12 of the artist's works, along with personal belongings such as his easel and wheelchair. The museum is a significant part of the town's cultural heritage.

This incident is the latest in a string of high-profile art thefts in Europe. Earlier this year, paintings by Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse were stolen from a museum near Parma, Italy, and later recovered in August. In October, a significant art robbery occurred at the Louvre in Paris, where jewels valued at €88 million were stolen by thieves disguised as construction workers.
