Chaos erupted on a Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Doha when two men allegedly assaulted flight attendants and claimed to have a firearm. The disruptive behavior, which began hours after departure, led to other passengers and crew restraining the men.
Footage from the incident shows a group of people, including staff, working to control the two individuals. Witnesses described the men as "aggressive and agitated." The ordeal lasted for several hours before authorities boarded the plane upon its arrival in Doha to take the passengers into custody. The airline confirmed that both passengers were handed over to local authorities.
A passenger on board, Jacqueline Felgate, documented the events and praised the flight attendants for their efforts, noting they were "hands on for about 10 hours straight." Another witness called the experience "terrifying" and criticized the behavior of the disruptive passengers, referring to it as "disgraceful."
The incident occurred on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, a detail noted by one passenger as adding to the fear experienced on board. The attacks in 2001 resulted in the deaths of approximately 3,000 Americans.
A spokesperson for Qatar Airways stated that the safety and wellbeing of its crew and passengers are the airline's highest priorities. The airline confirmed the physical altercation and the subsequent restraint of the two passengers, who were met by local authorities upon arrival in Doha.
