Two men have died at Seaton Carew Beach in Hartlepool after entering the water to assist children who were in distress. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on July 12, 2026, prompting a significant response from emergency services.

Police, coastguards, paramedics, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were dispatched to the scene. The two men were successfully brought out of the water by the RNLI crew. Despite immediate medical attention, both were pronounced dead a short time later.

The children involved were confirmed to be safe and were transported to a hospital for precautionary checks. The families of the deceased men are receiving support from specialist officers.

Superintendent Glen Ward of the police stated that the deaths are not being treated as suspicious and that inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing, with a file to be prepared for the coroner. Ward issued a warning about the dangers of open water, particularly during hot weather, and urged the public to avoid entering the sea.

"We know it is inviting in the hot weather, but we would encourage people to refrain from entering any open water at all," Ward said. "Today we have sadly seen the true tragedy that can happen as a result. Please take extra care and enjoy the warm weather as safely as possible."
