Two men have died at Seaton Carew Beach in Hartlepool, County Durham, after entering the water to attempt a rescue of children who had gotten into difficulty. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2026, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Police, coastguards, paramedics, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were dispatched to the scene. RNLI crews successfully brought both men out of the water. Despite immediate medical attention, they were pronounced dead a short time later. The children involved were confirmed to be safe and were taken to a local hospital for precautionary checks.
Superintendent Glen Ward of Cleveland Police expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of both the men involved in this tragic incident today," Ward stated. He added that the deaths are not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the event. Superintendent Ward took the opportunity to remind the public about the inherent risks associated with open water. "We know it is inviting in the hot weather, but we would encourage people to refrain from entering any open water at all," he urged. "Today we have sadly seen the true tragedy that can happen as a result. Please take extra care and enjoy the warm weather as safely as possible."
