Two people were seriously injured in a stabbing at Wigan Interchange on Wednesday evening, Greater Manchester Police said, and officers have arrested a teenage girl on suspicion of assisting an offender as they continue to seek the alleged knifeman.
Police were called to the bus station in the town centre at about 5.20 p.m. after a 15-year-old boy and a 42-year-old man sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries. The teenage girl remains in custody for questioning, police said, and they did not confirm anyone had been arrested in connection with the stabbings themselves.
Superintendent Danny O'Neil of Greater Manchester Police said officers had established a scene at the interchange and were investigating "the incident and the events that led up to it." He said police were reviewing CCTV footage and obtaining witness statements, and that officers would remain in the area throughout the evening. "Anyone who was in the area at the time and has information or saw the incident should contact us," he added.
An investigation is under way. Officers taped off part of the interchange and were seen standing guard, according to images from the scene. Police asked anyone with information to come forward as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify and locate the person believed to have used the knife.
Bee Network, which operates bus services in the area, said services were unable to call at Wigan bus station "until further notice" because of the police incident. It listed a number of services that were diverting via alternative town routes, including services diverting via King Street West, Dorning Street, Richmond Street, Hallgate and Bridgeman Terrace, Mesnes Park and New Market Street, and said some services were starting or terminating at King Street West.
Greater Manchester Police did not provide further details about the motive or the relationship, if any, between those involved. Local officers continued searches and enquiries into the evening's events.
News organisations contacted Greater Manchester Police for additional comment. Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who has relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Greater Manchester Police through the force’s usual channels, providing any information that could assist investigators.
