Two people were seriously injured in a stabbing at Wigan Interchange in central Wigan on Wednesday evening, and police said they have arrested a teenage girl on suspicion of assisting an offender while seeking the person believed to have carried out the attack.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were called to the bus station at about 5.20 p.m. after a 42-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. The girl remains in custody for questioning, GMP added, and investigators have not reported any arrests for the stabbings themselves.
Superintendent Danny O'Neil said officers had preserved a scene while they examined what happened and were carrying out CCTV enquiries and taking witness statements. "We will also have officers in the area throughout the evening and are currently reviewing CCTV and obtaining witness statements. Anyone who was in the area at the time and has information or saw the incident should contact us," he said.
Police tape and officers were visible inside the interchange after the incident, and GMP said an investigation is under way. The force appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward to assist the inquiry.
The local Bee Network said bus services would not call at Wigan bus station until further notice and announced a number of temporary diversions. Several routes were redirected via King Street West, Dorning Street, Richmond Street, Hallgate and other streets in the town centre, while other services were starting or terminating at alternative stops and following revised paths through Bridgeman Terrace, Mesnes Park, Parsons Walk, New Market Street, River Way, Powel Street and Mesnes Street.
Authorities did not provide further details on the motive for the attack or the condition of the victims beyond describing their injuries as serious but not life-threatening. Officers at the scene were conducting forensic examinations and reviewing CCTV as part of standard investigative procedures.
The arrest of the teenage girl was described by police only as being on suspicion of assisting an offender; she remains in custody as enquiries continue. GMP did not say whether any other suspects had been identified or located.
The incident prompted an immediate policing response in the town centre, including a visible presence at the interchange while detectives worked to establish the sequence of events. Investigators urged anyone with mobile phone footage, dashcam images or information relevant to the incident to contact Greater Manchester Police to help establish what occurred.
The inquiry remains ongoing and police said further updates would be provided as enquiries progress.
